Acquire Wizarding Skills This Summer by Learning to Fly an Owl on The Isle Of Wight

Wightlink and The Isle of Wight Owl & Falconry Centre join forces for fun days out

Already seen the new film and waiting impatiently to get your hands on the final book? Now, bored kids can acquire real-life Harry Potter-style skills during the summer holidays by learning to fly an owl … or a hawk … at a special summer course on the Isle of Wight.  The Isle of Wight Owl & Falconry Centre and ferry operator Wightlink (0870 582 7744 / www.wightlink.co.uk) have joined forces to offer Junior Falconer courses in July and August for children aged between 7 and 16.

Held in the 11-acre grounds of historic Appuldurcombe House near Wroxall on 25th July, and 1st, 15th, 22nd and 29th August, the one day Junior Falconer courses begin at 11am with an introduction to the birds of prey by John Owen, director of the Centre and Crocodile Dundee-lookalike, and his Head Falconer. By the end of the day, at 4pm, the Junior Falconers will not only have learnt the theory of bird handling but will have tested their skills by flying two trained birds – an owl, like Vivienne, a milky eagle owl and one of the best-loved stars of the centre’s daily flying displays, and perhaps also one of the centre’s harris hawks. All Junior Falconers will receive a souvenir photograph to remind them of their experience.

For a very special day out, children can enjoy a range of indoor and outdoor owl-related activities at Harry & the Owls on 25th, 26th and 27th August. There will be the chance to learn to fly the owls and a prize for every child in a wizard costume who joins the parade to the Haunted House for spooky goings on.

Places on the Junior Falconer course cost £20 per child * and can be combined with the Wightlink Owl and Falconry Days Out offer. The Wightlink Days Out package is priced at £51 for day return ferry travel for a car and up to four people from either Portsmouth or Lymington and includes entrance to the Owl and Falconry Centre. Junior Falconers must be aged 7-16 years and accompanied by an adult.

* Places on Junior Falconer courses are limited and must be booked in advance by calling 01983 852484. The special attraction inclusive day trip tickets should be booked via Wightlink on 0870 582 7744 www.wightlink.co.uk
