Wightlink Captain Joins Choir To Raise Money For Local Hospice

Captain Barry Vaughan, one of the Masters on Wightlink’s Lymington to Yarmouth route, raised £200 for Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington recently, by joining a choir put together specially to sing for the ‘Voices for Hospices’ appeal.

Voices for Hospices is a UK registered charity which co-ordinates a ‘Mexican Wave’ of simultaneous concerts round the globe, on the same day, once every two years.

Involving up to a million people each time and raising at least a pound for every one of those people, the concerts raise awareness and encourage new volunteers for each local unit involved.

Barry Vaughan (60) and his 80 choral colleagues packed into St Thomas’s Church in Lymington and gave a rousing rendition of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, no mean feat for a group of amateur singers.

Barry individually raised £100 from fellow Wightlink staff, which was matched pound for pound by the company, making a grand total of £200.

The funds were handed over to Oakhaven Hospice and in thanking Barry Vaughan and Wightlink for their donation, Oakhaven’s Fundraising Co-ordinator, Peter Smith, said:- “Without the generosity of our supporters and well wishers we could no longer provide our specialist care to patients in the local community whose illness is no longer curable. By easing physical symptoms and giving care to suit each individual, we enable them to enjoy the best quality of life possible, making a real difference to the lives of our patients and their families.”

Kerry Jackson, Marketing Manager for Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries, commented: - “Barry Vaughan has always enjoyed his singing and as soon as he heard of the Voices for Hospices event in Lymington he joined the choir in order to contribute towards Oakhaven Hospice.  Wightlink was delighted to be able to match his contribution, which we hope will go a small way to helping our local hospice.”
