A Banger Of An Event On The Isle Of Wight

Arreton Sweetcorn Festival – 27th – 30th September

Beer and bangers as well as sweetcorn will be on the menu when the Isle of Wight stages its first Arreton Sweetcorn Fayre from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th September during British Food Fortnight.  The new event, which celebrates the end of the sweetcorn harvest, brings together local producers and restaurant chefs who are committed to ‘cooking local’ and is sponsored by Wightlink (0871 376 4342/www.wightlink.co.uk), which will launch its new Wight Taste Trail* at the festival.

Opening daily from 10am, the four day free fayre takes place at Arreton Barns in the rural heart of the Isle of Wight and kicks off on Thursday 27th September with a Beer Festival, featuring Island brews from Ventnor Brewery and other local brewers.  On Friday 28th September ‘The Day of The Sausage’ heralds the third annual Farmer Jacks Sausage contest with the opportunity for banger tasting and at the weekend there are a host of food activities for visitors to get involved in. These include a Sweetcorn Roast, Apple Pressing and, in the evening, Farmer Jack’s BBQ and a Barn Dance.

A highlight of the event for be the 2007 Isle of Wight Food Festival on Sunday 30th September featuring local producers and selected mainland producers – with food hot and cold available to taste and buy.  This will include Farmer Jack’s Food Theatre featuring demonstrations, talks and tastings led by top local chefs and producers.

* Wightlink’s new 28-page booklet Wight Taste Trail features an Isle of Wight-wide trail profiling 19 of the best local producers, who include Richard Hodgson, whose fledgling Isle of Wight Cheese Company won Best British Cheese at this year’s World Cheese Awards – less than a year after the company opened its doors.
