100
of the world’s top windsurfers will be in action on the Isle
of Wight over August Bank Holiday at Europe’s largest
extreme sports event – White Air – as the World Windsurfing
Formula Racing Championships come to Britain for the first
time.
This
is one of several national and international championships
at the 11th annual White Air Festival, which attracts
extreme athletes from 40 countries to compete in 18 water
and land based sports. Spectators can watch the expert
action from the sidelines or take part in the ‘Have a Go’
sessions sponsored by Wightlink (0870 582 7744/
www.wightlink.co.uk), who offer a range of ferry
packages from Portsmouth and Lymington.
The
Wightlink ‘Have a Go’ sessions provide the opportunity for
complete beginners to try a wide range of high adrenaline
sports under expert guidance. The 18 choices include
kitesurfing, windsurfing, ocean kayaking and parkour, the
art of free running in which the objective is to get from A
to B in the shortest possible time – even when it means
running up walls and over roofs. Lessons are either free or
at a small charge and can be pre-booked at
www.whiteair.co.uk.
White Air 2007 takes place from 27th August to 3rd September
around Yaverland, Sandown Bay on the Isle of Wight. Three
day entry passes cost £17.50 for adults and £10 for children
whilst a family pass costs £49.50 for two adults and two
children. Wightlink offers a range of day and short break
ferry packages for spectators, starting from £40 for a
family (up to 2 adults and 3 children) Wight Rover day
return ticket, which combines foot passenger ferry crossings
from Portsmouth to Ryde or Lymington to Yarmouth and
unlimited travel for the day on Southern Vectis buses.
Alternatively, a day-return fare for a car and up to four
passengers costs £53 whilst a five day return ticket for a
car and up to four passengers costs £86.
