Inspirational Islanders: Derek Curtis, Amazon World Zoo Park

Owner of one of the Island’s most successful attractions, Amazon World Zoo Park, Derek is a true cockney. He grew up amidst the hustle and bustle of London, before owning a successful building company.

Amazon World is a special kind of attraction where you can learn about conservation and rain forests and come face to face with some of the world’s most unusual and endangered creatures.

“I was drawn to the Island because of its beauty, from its rolling hills to its golden beaches. It also has a great community to live and work in – everyone is so friendly and helpful.

One of my most favourite places is on top of the downs looking over towards Sandown. It is so peaceful up there. My wife and I often stop to admire the view.

For such a small Island, there are so many great events throughout the year, but the one I always look forward to is the Scooter Rally in August. The ride out is a great spectacle to watch. I have always been a mod!

My earliest and fondest memories of the Isle of Wight are of visiting with Sandra and friends before we had our two sons, who are now in their forties. We visited several times before moving over in the early nineties.

If I only had an hour to spend on the Island, I would have to say, go to Amazon World Zoo Park. My blood, sweat and tears have literally gone into this place. Much more than just a business, it is my hobby, my passion and my drive.”
