Inspirational Islanders: Neil Southwell, Photographer

Working in the family business, Oasis, since leaving school, Neil has always been interested in photography – capturing Island landscapes, as well as events such as the Round the Island Race, Isle of Wight Festival and Bestival. Neil has had his work featured in several national publications and showcases his glass wall art at Oasis.

“The Island as a whole has always been my home, with so many different locations to visit, from the golden-sanded beach of Compton to the panoramic views across the Solent from Appley beach. We are fortunate to have so many great attractions and places to visit, which makes raising a family on the Island more fun!

I have several favourite parts of the Island, however, if I had to choose just one, it would have to be Seagrove beach located in Seaview. I spent many years of my early life there, enjoying climbing on to the rocks, skimming stones and crabbing on a summer’s day.
We are spoilt for choice for events here, but I have always had a passion for the Scooter Rally which starts at Ryde and ends this year at Sandown Airport. With so many hobbyists and professional scooters taking part from all over the country, the seafront is full of vibrant scooters and great atmosphere!

One of my fondest memories growing up was seeing the start of Oasis, which my parents started back in 1988 in the conservatory, renting plants to events and local businesses. This then progressed towards the site where we are now located at Carpenters Road with a much larger store.

If I only had one hour to spend on the Island, I would enjoy it with my wife and son at Blackgang Chine, we’ve had some amazing times and laughter there. If I had a sneaky few minutes left, I would of course jump into Oasis and check out the latest delivery from Bali!”
