Dangerous Substances
Whenever any dangerous/hazardous substances are shipped on our services, such goods must be declared prior to shipment.
The Dangerous Substances in Harbour Areas Regulations (1987) came into force on 1st June 1987 and, as a consequence, it is now a legal requirement for the haulier to advise both the Harbour Authority and Wightlink, a minimum of 24 hours in advance, of all dangerous cargoes being presented for shipment. It is the haulier's duty to inform Wightlink in advance and Wightlink cannot be held responsible for any inconvenience, delay or expense incurred by refusing shipment due to lack of notice given. Whilst certain substances are permitted on passenger ships, others are restricted.
Packing and labelling must comply with the I.M.D.G. code in order for shipment to be accepted. Wightlink provides special "Dangerous Goods Only" sailings during the night on the Portsmouth-Fishbourne route for certain categories of restricted substances. Details are available on request.
Please comply with the above regulations when dangerous goods are carried. There is no surcharge for the carriage of dangerous goods.
