Choice of routes

Lymington-Yarmouth Crossing time 30 minutes

This route offers the shortest vehicle ferry crossing to the Island and provides easy access to Central and West Wight, and is particularly suitable for traffic from the West Country. The three vessels on this route provide hourly sailings throughout the day, increasing to half-hourly crossings at peak periods.

Portsmouth - Fishbourne Crossing time approx 40 minutes

This crossing is ideal for commercial vehicles travelling to Central and East Wight, for the principal towns of Newport, Cowes, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor. The four ships operating on this route are the largest vehicle ferries on any cross-Solent route. This service operates all year round, day and night with an average of 29 return weekday sailings, 27 at weekends plus extra sailings at busy periods.

The Portsmouth - Fishbourne route is especially suited to the shipment of abnormal loads, as the ships have double-width ramps and can accommodate extra long or heavy loads, subject to sufficient spread of weight.

Vehicles with an overall height in excess of the following dimensions may also be accepted but it is essential that prior notification be given in all instances, as shipment necessitates special scheduling.

 Maximum Dimensions
  Portsmouth/Fishbourne Lymington/Yarmouth
Height 4.75m (15'6") 4.06m (13'4")
Width 5.38m (17'8") 3.51m (11'6")

Dangerous substances

The Dangerous Substances in Harbour Areas Regulations (1987) came into force on June 1 1987 and, as a consequence, it is now a legal requirement for the haulier to advise both the Harbour Authority and Wightlink, a minimum of 24 hours in advance, of all dangerous cargoes being presented for shipment.

It is the haulier’s duty to inform Wightlink in advance and Wightlink cannot be held responsible for any inconvenience or expense incurred by refusing shipment due to lack of notice given. Whilst certain substances are permitted on passenger ships, others are restricted.

Packaging and labelling must comply with the I.M.D.G. code in order for shipment to be accepted.

Wightlink provides special "Dangerous Goods Only" sailings during the night on the Portsmouth - Fishbourne route for certain categories of restricted substances. Details are available upon request.
