Statement from Wightlink Ferries – Saturday 19 July: 12:00

Wightlink Ferries conducted full safety checks on its other ferries overnight following the incident which affected the St Helen last night.  Engineers inspected and tested the mezzanine decks before returning the ships to service.  St Helen remains out of service.
The checks follow the incident which affected St Helen’s car deck at 22:16 on Friday 18 July.  The 21:30 St Helen car ferry sailing from Portsmouth Gunwharf arrived at Fishbourne with 181 passengers and 11 crew on board and, as part of the usual disembarkation process, after vehicles on the lower deck had left the ship, the starboard forward mezzanine deck with nine cars on board was lowered. When it was a short distance from the deck below, it dropped a few feet and made contact with the lower deck.

As a precautionary measure, three passengers and one crew member were taken to St Mary’s Hospital by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.  All four have been discharged. A member of Wightlink’s management team attended the hospital to support customers.
As well as conducting its own investigation, Wightlink will be cooperating fully with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency investigations.  While those investigations are underway, Wightlink will not be making further comment on the possible cause of the incident.

St Helen, in common with all Wightlink ferries, is inspected regularly by external surveyors. The last independent engineering survey of the ship, including its mezzanine decks, took place in May 2014 following her annual maintenance and refit.
No significant disruption is expected as a result of the incident, however as a result of St Helen being out of service, minor delays are expected from Portsmouth Gunwharf between 10:00 and 14:00 and from Fishbourne between 11:00 and 13:00 today.
