Why it’s special
Find the sweet-scented Hoary Stock on the south-facing cliffs of the Isle of
Wight and you may discover the rare Glanville Fritillary butterfly as well.
The rich purple flowers, reminiscent of the garden Wallflower, make a
spectacular show from May through to August and like it best in areas remote
from civilisation. Perhaps that’s why they can only be found on the Isle of
Wight and on Brighton’s chalk cliffs and adjacent grasslands.
Where to find it
This nationally rare coastal plant clings to the steep rocky cliffs between
the Needles and Bonchurch including the downs above St. Catherine’s Point.
What else is there at St Catherine’s Point?
Looking down to St. Catherine’s Point and its lighthouse, the most southerly
point of the Island, the view is staggering and the scenery wild. Classified
as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and a Site of Special
Scientific Interest (SSSI), this extensive area of downland supports rare
species like Hound’s tongue and Wild Liquorice.
