| A fresh Taste of Wight |
|
The mild climate of the Isle of
Wight and its acre upon acre of fertile farming land helps to explain why
the Island has such an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce. This means that
today’s ‘hot otato’ – the number of miles travelled to the table by much of
the food that we eat – is less of an issue forthe local Island community.
Farmer Jack’s Farm Shop at Arreton Barns in the lush Arreton Valley is a
testament to the sheer range and quality of Wight produce. Set up in 2005 to
provide the freshest, vitamin-filled foods by a trio of Island vegetable,
free range pork and dairy farmers, since then it has expanded dramatically
and now offers a wide range of produce, delivered daily from Isle of Wight
farmers. Aiming to provide healthy food, year round, the emphasis at Farmer
Jack’s is on fresh, seasonal produce. Depending on when you visit, you might
find local Arreton-grown asparagus or sweetcorn, sweet herry tomatoes or
Island strawberries.
Look out for local chutneys and honey, fresh lamb, pork and bacon, clotted
cream and handcrafted cakes. And for holidaymakers who are self-catering,
there’s a delicious fast food menu and a hamper service too. |
