When Maggie Hilton came across the fantasy paintings of Josephine Wall, she decided to use the artist’s imagination to create a magical atmosphere in the Victorian manor house that she and Australian husband Ric were converting at south coast Niton. As a result, the Enchanted Manor - already a rare combination of seaside house and country mansion, standing in an acre of woodland – became a fantastic hideaway in the true sense of the word.
The first thing that hits you as you enter is the huge Beauty and the Beast painting in the reception area. This sets the tone for an environment overflowing with colourful, fantastical paintings, murals and stained-glass windows. There are even fairies – not real ones of course – and a hall bedecked with glittering lights. It’s far from being a Disney-style hotel though. The effect is serene and tranquil, a special place to come and relax.
Upstairs, each room has its own character, defined by one of Josephine Wall’s artworks and large in dimension, with high Victorian ceilings. Ric and Maggie have added to original features like the marble fireplaces in the bedroom suites with ornate hand-carved French four posters, Venetian glass chandeliers and exquisite bathrooms. These feature roll top baths, deluxe showers with water jets and cast iron basins that come with a resident angel.
