Last year was a year of celebration for Seaview Wildlife Encounter as it celebrated its' 40th anniversary!

The business is celebrating many milestones and achievements including a remarkable increase in turnover over the last two years, with August 2010 as the busiest month ever on record.

During the past two years, Seaview Wildlife has become increasingly involved in conducting outreach and educational programmes to schools and residential care homes and is looking to further expand its educational role in the year ahead.

In March of this year Seaview Wildlife was awarded full BIAZA membership (British & Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria), the regulatory body that ensures high standards within wildlife parks, zoos and aquaria throughout the UK.   This membership facilitates shared research and information and access to shared databases.

The positive accolades awarded to this business come not only as a result of professional opinion.  More remarkable is the regular feedback from the Park’s visitors.  Report-backs are consistently excellent with comments such as “the best visitor experience on the Island” not being unusual.  There appears to be an ever-increasing visitor appreciation of the Park’s high standards of animal husbandry, upkeep of the site, professional, friendly service and overall attention to detail.

So what is the recipe to achieving this ongoing success?

Other than the consistent commitment of the business partners, every employee in the business appears to be striving for excellence – resulting in a cohesive, positive, friendly team that encourages excellence in every aspect of the business.

The business has not shied away from modern business trends.  Social networking has been at the forefront of recent developments at Seaview Wildlife with the introduction in 2009 of a successful blog.  The Park has also been a trend-setter in launching Dippy, its Penguin mascot, to be the first live Penguin with its own Facebook page.  In addition to being a modern communication and marketing platform Dippy on Facebook has been an effective way of reaching out to a (predominantly) younger global audience with a mix of light-hearted banter as well as conveying more serious conservation messages.

In terms of environmental responsibility, Seaview Wildlife has prioritised sustainability within their business ethos.  A Sustainability Policy has been developed and is being clearly demonstrated.   Examples include a policy of purchasing locally-sourced Island foodstuffs wherever possible; recycling of Sainsbury’s waste food (fruit and vegetables) to feed the Park’s livestock; composting food leftovers; re-cycling of rainwater to be repeatedly pumped around the Park’s myriad streams, lakes and water features.

As the business reflects over the past 40 years and then looks forward to the visions of the next 40 being fulfilled, there is no doubt that the real stars of the show are the animals and birds.  They have the ability to stimulate fierce loyalty, love and laughter, and are undoubtedly the source of the feel-good factor that has made this business one of the Isle of Wight’s most enduring attractions.
