Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight
« Back to all attractions in History and Culture
Carisbrooke Castle is the historic royal castle on the Isle of Wight. It is remarkably complete with battlements to march across and a keep to climb and is famous as a royal prison to Charles I.
The donkeys that live at the castle are a must-see and there are lots of hands-on activities too. Relax in the Princess Beatrice Garden, designed by TV presenter and award-winning garden designer, Chris Beardshaw. Don’t miss our Time Travellers Go … events for kids aged 5-14 in August.
There are all the ingredients here for a great value family day out in the Isle of Wight.

Marvel at medieval knights as they take on the ultimate tournament. Fully armoured and ready to do battle, watch knights in hand to hand combat, archery competitions and much more. Who will reign supreme and be the victor.
Time Travellers Go… Gruesome - Sunday 26–Wednesday 29 August 10am - 5pm

Time Travellers Go… Ghosts and Ghouls - Saturday 27 October–Sunday 4 November 10am - 4pm
Little horrors can scare themselves silly this Halloween with creepy crafts, spooky activities and ghost hunting galore! Take part in a knee trembling trail around the grounds to find the hidden tomb and discover who lies within. Create terrifying decorations in the craft area and wander the grounds with a ghost hunter as he tells gruesome tales of times gone by!
There’s so much to see and do at the many English Heritage sites on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire – each offering different periods of history to explore, gardens or grounds to enjoy and with entrance prices offering great value for money. Families are welcome to bring picnics, but many sites offer excellent catering facilities ranging from tearooms to restaurants.
English Heritage members receive free admission to all properties and free or reduced entry to events.
