Moving further south, this world famous gorge is entered from Shanklin Old Village. Dropping 105 ft from the top of the cliff to sea level, Shanklin Chine is a natural fissure in the cliff, formed by water cutting through sandstone to the sea.

The chine walk leads through a deeply shaded path winding down beside waterfalls to the shore and along the way there are more than 150 varieties of wild plants and many species of moss to discover.

Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this magical place, with its rare plants, woodland walk, wildlife (red squirrels) and enchanting waterfalls. Much loved by poets, artists and writers when visiting Shanklin. After dusk, during the main summer months, subtle illuminations create a different world. Visit the Heritage Centre to see the 'Historic Jubilee Exhibition' and the PLUTO room, then enjoy a cream tea in the Conservatory.
