Here are the answers to the Solent quiz
  1. Seven or more short blasts, followed by one long blast, on the ship's whistle and/or alarm bells; (NB. the ship's "whistle" may be more commonly known of as the "foghorn"). '
  2. St. Catherine, St. Cecilia, St. Clare, St. Faith or St. Helen.
    • All are registered in LONDON (written on lifebuoys, under the ship's name on the stem, and on the Passenger Certificate in the main passenger lounge).
  3. 14.7 knots (almost 17 mph - in land miles), and is a SPEED not a distance.
  4. Different colours and shapes are used to differentiate between marks indicating the sides of deep-water channels, isolated dangers or the extremities of shallow water etc.; so that mariners can avoid hazards hidden below the surface of the water.
    • Red - Can shape, Green - Conical, Yellow - Sphere or Can, Yellow and Black - Pillar. -
  5. 1.3 Nautical miles (about 1.5 land miles).

  7. The COLOUR OF THE SEATS on the Upper Deck is different on each ship:
    • St. Catherine (Green), St. Cecilia (White - originally yellow), St. Faith (Blue), St. Helen (Red).
      The St. Clare is a totally different shape from the other four older car ferries.
