With May half term just around the corner, families are spoilt for choice on the Isle of Wight, which has a great selection of events to keep everyone entertained. During the school holidays*, kids travel free with every adult foot passenger day return ticket from Wightlink, so there’s no better solution for those wanting to visit the Island for a day trip or longer break.
Here are our recommendations for family-friendly activities on the Isle of Wight this May half term:
Sky High at Robin Hill
New for 2019, Sky High will see over forty hot air balloons take to the sky in an incredible display over three days. From 27th until 30th May, visitors will also have the opportunity to meet the pilots and go inside the balloons, as well as take part in kite making and flying workshops. What’s more, on 27th and 29th May, the event will continue into the evening for the Night Glow Experience. The balloons will be lit up in all their glory and guests can marvel at a fantastic sound and light production whilst enjoying food, drinks and live music.
Wild West Week at Blackgang
From 25th May until 2nd June, Wild West Week will be taking place at Blackgang Chine and will offer entertainment for all ages. Families can participate in dance workshops, a Bucking Bronco and even have the chance to meet the cowboys themselves. For the first time this year there will also be a live-action cowboy show, with stunts and entertainment for children and adults alike. Plus, on 27th, 29th and 31st May, the Sundown event lets visitors enjoy the action into the evening. With a mariachi band, delicious food and the Point Blank Stunt Show, there’s plenty on offer for the whole family.
Steam Railway Spring Gala
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway will be holding a spring gala from 25th – 27th May, giving visitors the rare opportunity to see a host of Victorian and Edwardian railway vehicles and even the chance to take a ride around. There will also be a Real Ale Bar serving authentic Island beers, as well as refreshment rooms for visitors to grab a bite to eat.
Shield decorating children’s workshop
For children that love to explore and discover more about history, the Archaeology Discovery Centre will be hosting a workshop on Saturday 25th May, where children and parents can create and decorate their own shields. The centre itself is a great place to learn about the history of the Saxons and Tudor knights.
Summer Slide at Robin Hill Country Park
An epic 100m waterslide will be at Robin Hill Country Park from 25th May until 2nd June, allowing visitors to try out the fun slide by splashing and sliding their way down a hill. An ideal activity for families and groups of friends, it’s a great adrenaline-inducing experience.
*Dates for Hampshire & IOW May half term: 25 May 2019 to 2 June 2019
