Wightlink is one of the largest UK domestic ferry companies, carrying over 4.5 million passengers a year across the Solent.

Recent development and regeneration of our six port locations has taken place to complement our six ships and two catamarans, including our new hybrid energy flagship, Victoria of Wight.

The Mainland Port Operations Manager will primarily be based across three mainland Port locations:

  • Lymington positioned at the tip of the New Forest National Park offering picturesque views of the Western Solent supporting three Car Ferries operating to Yarmouth
  • Portsmouth Harbour Pier, situated close to the historic Portsmouth Dockyard and flanked by HMS Warrior supporting two Catamaran Passenger Ferries operating to Ryde
  • Gunwharf, developed from the site of a once Royal Navy Dry Dock offering accessibility for over 400 vehicles within a new two tier time efficiency loading system supporting three Car Ferries operating to Fishbourne.

Ideally candidates will have previous leadership experience working in a 24/7 transport, distribution or logistics operational environment.

As part of our Port Operations Team targeting ‘Raising the Standard’, the successful candidate will report to our Head of Port Operations and will be expected to collaborate closely in the establishment and continuous development of a motivated and focused team of around 50 colleagues, each committed to a customer excellence centred ethos.

Coordination and Leadership

  • Coordinate, lead and monitor the workings of all aspects of the Port Operations over the three Ports.
  • To lead the Port Operations teams, maintain and improve efficiency and productivity of all aspects of the customer experience and operation.
  • Provide visible leadership across each of the Ports.

Financial

  • Review financial budgets and control expenditure within the three Ports.
  • Maximise efficiency of technology and colleagues to reduce and manage capital expenditure.
  • Review and plan colleague schedules to enable the Ports to be as efficient as possible.

Project/Planning

  • Lead project work for the Operational Team.
  • Provide and act upon analytical and statistical data for operational performance.
  • Plan and lead operational events.

Human Resources

  • Conduct internal investigations.
  • Conduct performance management reviews.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with Trade Unions and build strategies to improve colleague welfare.

Communication

  • Monitor, lead and improve the efficiency of communication between the three Ports and our Engineering and Estates, Resource Planning Office, IT, HR, Accounts and Finance teams with the Ports.
  • Work alongside the Customer Experience team to maintain and deliver constant internal and external communications to our colleagues and customers.

Working in a 24/7 operation – the Mainland Port Operations Manager will be deployed in a shared roster with the Island Port Operations Manager. Leadership will be split between the Head of Port Operations/Island Port Operations Manager/Mainland Port Operations Manager.

Annual salary circa £45K.
