Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan has seen the results of Wightlink’s £45million investment in its key route from the city to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight for himself on a visit to its car ferry terminal in Gunwharf Road.
The Labour MP saw the new double-deck boarding ramp in Gunwharf Road that has speeded up vehicle loading and unloading and reduced congestion on approach roads in the city centre.
Wightlink’s new £30million hybrid energy flagship Victoria of Wight is powered by a combination of low-sulphur marine gas oil and batteries. It is quieter and operates with lower emissions than conventional ferries.
Operations Director Daryl Palmer escorted Stephen to the Bridge to see the technology in action and enjoy a unique view of Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent.
Stephen Morgan MP says:
“My opportunity to observe Victoria of Wight, the newest vessel in Wightlink’s fleet, in action on the Portsmouth-Fishbourne route was eye-opening.
“From observing Captain Dave Booker and the crew at work and even driving the ship for a short time myself, this visit enabled me to see what impact hybrid energy would have.
“The fact that Wightlink is moving with the times, and taking steps in the right direction when it comes to climate change, is an inspiration to other local organisations and in line with the ethos of Portsmouth.
“I look forward to seeing further innovative ways to tackle climate change from Wightlink and others in our great city.”
