Wightlink has lent a helping paw to RSPCA Isle of Wight which has recently experienced a sudden increase in the number of dogs needing help.

After hearing the charity’s plea, the dog-friendly ferry company – organiser of the Isle of Wight’s inaugural Woof Awards – was quick to offer a package of free and discounted ferry crossings, donations of much-needed kit from Wightlink colleagues and also agreeing to support its kennel sponsorship scheme.

Through the kennel sponsorship, Wightlink will assist the charity to provide vaccinations for their dogs along with food, treats, comfortable kennels with laundered bedding, toys, shampoo and brushes, vehicle transportation as well as caring staff to exercise and enrich the lives of the animals in their care.

Many animals arriving at the RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch require veterinary medical treatment to support their recovery from neglect, abuse and abandonment. The support from Wightlink will help bring supplies from the mainland and also help with the costs of rehoming – which is not always possible on the Island.

Stuart James from Wightlink says: “We were really saddened to hear about an incident on the Island involving so many dogs needing care and got in touch with the charity to see how Wightlink could help. We are delighted to become a kennel sponsor and have developed what we hope will be an ongoing relationship with the charity to provide discounted travel to support the RSPCA in their important work caring for animals in need.”

Suzanne Pugh, RSPCA Branch Manager, says: “We were so pleased to be contacted by Wightlink at what was a very challenging time for the centre, this help is going to make such a difference to animals in our care. As well as support with daily kennel costs, Wightlink’s help with cross-Solent trips will help enormously as we develop plans to find forever homes for the high number of dogs currently at the centre.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support from the Island community, which has rallied round to help us at a difficult time. Financial donations enable us to direct our efforts where it is most needed including ongoing costs of veterinary treatment, medications and surgeries for animals in need – if people are able to help then please visit our website for details of how to donate.”
