Tucked away in Gunwharf Quays, Aspex is Portsmouth’s leading contemporary art gallery and completely free to enter. With over 38 years experience in showcasing emerging contemporary artists, there will always be something innovative, intriguing and exciting for you to see or do.
The gallery itself boasts three exhibition spaces, an Artists Studio, Learning Space, Craft Shop and Cafe, all of which are located in a stunning Grade II listed naval monument. The exhibition spaces change at various times throughout the year and hold intriguing and creative work from emerging artists.
Sit down and relax at Port Coffee, the onsite cafe at Aspex. They boast a new coffee experience combining the traditions of Portsmouth with tasty Czech influences and also sell tasty snacks and treats. Port Coffee is supported by Southsea’s favourite artisan bakery, Bread Addiction.
Whilst most galleries can be a bit tricky with children, Aspex is anything but. With fun menu choices such as kids hot chocolate and mini sandwiches, room for buggies and baby changing facilities, this is a place for the whole family to come and enjoy.
Aspex also have a number of weekly workshops:
From 11:30 – 12:30 every Wednesday, including school holidays, Mini Makers is a free workshop and the perfect place for early years to take part in accessible and friendly arts and crafts activities, alongside their parent or guardian. The workshops are inspired by storybooks and each session incorporates a unique activity, whether that be painting, modelling or collage. The sessions are flexible and informal for families to stay as long as they like, take a break at any time and rejoin the fun.
Every Friday from 10:30 – 12:30, Generate is a free arts workshop for people with dementia. The sessions provide a comfortable environment for participants to learn new arts and crafts skills, supported by artists Roy Eneas and Abi Wheeler, whilst enjoying a weekly sociable activity. Participants will also be provided with free tea, coffee and cake from Port Coffee. A separate self-run group for carers takes place alongside the sessions in the cafe space where carers can use the opportunity to take part in some essential respite and share stories. Spaces must be booked in advance so for more information or to book a place, email call the gallery on 02392 778080.
Every Saturday from 11:00 – 13:00, Family Saturdays is a free drop in workshop for the whole family. Each of these unique workshops take place in the Learning Space, led by local artists Bethia Wentworth and Jordan Baines. Every week involves different activities responding to Aspex’s diverse exhibition programme.
