Adrian moved to the Isle of Wight in 2002 for what was meant to be a summer job at The George Hotel, but which became a ten-year stay there. After working with chef Robert Thompson, he became manager at The Wheatsheaf in 2020, but has now taken on its tenancy. The quirky Yarmouth pub offers relaxed dining, craft beers and a welcoming harbour-side atmosphere. Fully immersed in the community, Adrian is also proud to serve with the Yarmouth Lifeboat crew.
What is it about the Island that appeals to you as a place to live and work?
As well as having amazing countryside and beaches, I think it’s the people that make it such a great place to live and work; the friendliness and willingness to help each other really makes a difference here.
Where is your favourite place on the Island?
My home and my heart are firmly in Yarmouth. I love it here; there’s a real sense of community. I am currently Chairman of Trustees at The Community Hall of Yarmouth and District (CHOYD) and I helped set up and run Yarmouth Traders. The collective gets all the town’s businesses and local services together, and we have achieved some great stuff for the town by working together.
Where is your favourite beach on the Island?
I like it at St Helens. It’s a lovely beach and there is lots of activity to watch on the water.
Where is your favourite place on the Island to go for a walk?
Tennyson Down. I don’t enjoy the walk going up, but the views are amazing and it’s nice coming down!
What is your favourite Island event?
I don’t get out much, but I always like the events Yarmouth Carnival Committee puts on. They really show what the community can do working together.
If readers only had an hour on the Island, what would you recommend they do or where would you recommend they visit?
I am biased, but definitely visit The Wheatsheaf in Yarmouth… but seriously, I think everyone should see the views, cliffs and beaches along the Military Road.
