Inspirational Islanders: Rosie Gibbs, The Met Wine Bar

Rosie was born on the Isle of Wight and spent her early years in Whitwell, before moving to Ventnor when her parents bought the derelict site now known as The Spyglass Inn. Starting work there aged just 12, Rosie quickly discovered a passion for hospitality. After 35 years at The Spyglass, she reopened The Met Wine Bar, where she now works alongside her children, continuing a proud family tradition. Set on Ventnor Esplanade, the bar has a Mediterranean feel and stunning sea views.

What is it about the Island that appeals to you as a place to live and work?

The Island has a much slower pace of life, with so many beautiful beaches and coastal walks and we get to go to the beach every day to work. I have the best memories of growing up here, riding bikes, taking long walks through the fields and playing in treehouses my dad built. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

Where is your favourite place on the Island?

My favourite place would have to be Ventnor. With our own microclimate, Spanish wall lizards, many different shops, bars, pubs and restaurants, you could honestly think you were in the Mediterranean.

Where is your favourite beach on the Island?

It would obviously have to be Ventnor too. It still has the feel of an old Victorian seafront, with great pubs, bars, restaurants and of course the Longshoreman’s Museum.

Where is your favourite place on the Island to go for a walk?

I have two favourite walks: a shorter one being the coastal path from Ventnor round to Steephill Cove or a nice winter walk is from Ventnor following the route of the old Ventnor West railway line and then on the Pilgrim’s Path into Whitwell. From there you can head to Niton for a delicious Sunday roast.

What is your favourite Island event?

It’s got to be Ventnor Carnival, which now coincides with The Pirate Festival. The whole town is just buzzing with events and live music for everyone, young and old.

If readers only had an hour on the Island, what would you recommend they do or where would you recommend they visit?

I would definitely recommend going to Ventnor. The quirky town, lots of lovely little shops, friendly locals, a huge choice of fabulous bars and restaurants and of course, our beautiful seaside.
