Skye Priede, Talented Athlete on the beach on the Isle of Wight

Inspirational Islanders: Skye Priede – Water Polo Player

Wightlink is a big part of life on the Isle of Wight. We regularly give back to the communities that we operate in, to leave a legacy for future generations. In our Inspirational Islanders blog series, we interview inspiring people from on the Isle of Wight to find out about their lives and what they love about the Island. From photographers to netball players, each one shares their favourite places to give you insider knowledge on where to find the best coffee, walks, sunsets, wildlife and much more.

Isle of Wight resident Skye began playing water polo at the age of nine while living in Cape Town, South Africa. Currently 14 years old, she trains with Portsmouth City and plays for Hampshire and the South East Region Girls team, among others. She maintains her fitness and speed in the water by training with the Seaclose Swimming Club at Medina.

“My favourite Island destination has to be either Shanklin or Nodes Point beach (The Duver) as I love swimming and standup paddleboarding  there in the blue, refreshing ocean. The beaches are definitely a perk of living on the Island. Even from afar the sea is a real stress reliever. Sometimes I get the most joy from just watching the water shapeshift and morph into fun and playful waves.

I wish I could spend every afternoon at the seaside, but when I am not at school or taking part in after school activities, I can generally be found at my number one Island training spot, the 1Leisure swimming pool at Medina, where I swim with my swimming club, Seaclose. I really enjoy the levels of fitness at every one of these sessions.

Ryde is my favourite Island spot to live, as not only is it close to school, but I love the fact that from many of the streets you can see the sea. It is also great for beach walks with its huge expanse of sand.

In summer, my best thing to do is go down to Shanklin, swim in the sea, play mini golf and get awesome ice cream.

Being part of the Talented Athlete Scheme is a fantastic opportunity for me. The discounted ferries allow me to attend more training practices and tournaments on the mainland which will help improve my game, but also if I get injured, I now have access to a team of people who can help me on the Island.”
