At the heart of the Isle of Wight Military & Heritage Museum is Steve Taylor, whose passion and dedication have helped shape it into one of the Island’s most fascinating attractions. Based at Northwood Camp, the museum brings history to life through interactive exhibits, wartime street scenes, military vehicles and personal stories shared by knowledgeable volunteers.
What is it about the Island that appeals to you as a place to live and work?
We love the Isle of Wight for the people and the slower pace of life. Plus, there’s great weather most of the time and lots to do.
Where is your favourite place on the Island?
We moved to Carisbrooke 24 years ago and while the high street has changed radically in that time, it still has its charm and is very central. The Castle is a short walk away and there is a real community spirit in the village. St Mary’s churchyard is full of history and well worth visiting.
Where is your favourite beach on the Island?
My wife and I love Gurnard Beach in the winter. The dog can walk and we love looking for old glass among the shingle. There is also a great view of the Solent.
Where is your favourite place on the Island to go for a walk?
Carisbrooke Castle. It was built shortly after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century to defend the Isle of Wight from invasion, and over the years it has served as a royal fortress, a military stronghold and as the prison of King Charles I. So much history and such a lovely surrounding area with Carisbrooke Priory nearby. I love walking along the moat.
What is your favourite Island event?
It’s got to be the 1940s weekend at Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Probably the most nostalgic event of the year. It’s great to see all the vintage vehicles and everyone dressed up in their uniforms.
If readers only had an hour on the Island, what would you recommend they do or where would you recommend they visit?
I might be a little biased, but I’d suggest a visit to the Wight Military & Heritage Museum. An hour wouldn’t be long enough, but the entry ticket now includes a 12-month annual membership and means they could revisit free of charge as many times as they like for a whole year!
