We are looking for a fully qualified Electrical Engineer to join Wightlink Engineering Team. The role will include: fault finding on Marine Power, Switchgear, code interpretation on Controls/PLC systems, AC & DC systems below 1000V for marine propulsion. Other duties include assisting with general electrical maintenance on ships, working on a range of electrical machinery and equipment. Expected to act as Subject Matter Expert and provide electrical engineering assistance, advice and guidance to Ships’ Engineers.

Accountable to the Technical Superintendent, the successful candidate will be expected to complete Planned and Corrective Maintenance afloat as well as to supervise contractors. Additional duties include the need to work ashore in close support of the company Shore Electrical Engineering Technician as required and be a Master Technician to an Apprentice.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 Diploma in Marine Electrical Engineering (Advanced)
  • Full current driving licence
  • IPAF Previous experience working within the marine industry

Job Role

  • Maintain Awareness of Health and Safety issues specific to electrical works and ensure formal risk assessments/LOTO are completed before hazardous work is carried out.

  • Self-motivated and able to work using own initiative taking jobs through to completion including the administration associated with progressing and closing out tasks.
  • Have the appetite and ability to work on controls problems with OEM technicians and supervise them.
  • Understand the underlying principles governing marine electrical supply/distribution systems.
  • Able to use correct tools, equipment & materials used in electrical/electronic installations.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and have experience of keeping ships electrical line drawings and documentation up to date.
  • Monitor status of ships electrical line drawings and ensure that ships staff keep this documentation up to date.
  • Able to operate plant & equipment as required to diagnose and remedy electrical faults.
  • Install new external electrical work to specification including but not limited to: Marine Power, Switchgear, code interpretation on Controls/PLC systems, AC & DC systems up to 1000V for marine propulsion.
  • Checking installations and equipment for accuracy and conformity to appropriate standards.
  • Support the commissioning of electrical systems and components.
  • Monitor and where necessary expedite electrical maintenance and repair progress in Planned Maintenance systems such as MAXIMO and REFMAN.
  • Provide advice and technical input on electrical engineering aspects of a new build specification, training and associated infrastructure.
  • Will be required sometimes at short notice to work late to remedy emergent defects
  • Support Fleet Electro-Technical Officer on electrical issues.
  • Visit all ships on all routes to complete repairs and maintenance tasks as required
  • Willing to work flexible hours (inc. PH and W/E), overtime and to participate in Standby/Call-out rota.
  • Attendance at refits for maintenance, defect rectification and electrical contractor supervision.
  • Assist with general electrical maintenance repair & lead on technical upgrades on ships, working on all types of electrical machinery and equipment owned and operated by Wightlink.
