Wightlink helps Blackgang Chine celebrate its 175th birthday

Travellers heading to and from the Isle of Wight this summer have been welcomed on board Wightlink’s St Clare ferry by characters from Blackgang Chine. Lady Penelope and Raphus, two larger-than-life Dodos, were joined by The Fairy Queen and Buffalo Bob the Bounty Hunter to entertain holidaymakers and other customers crossing the Solent.

Captain Ed Stickley gave his unusual passengers a tour of the Bridge before they mingled with passengers and spread the word about the 175th anniversary celebrations at the popular Island attraction.

The UK’s oldest amusement park, Blackgang Chine was founded by Alexander Dabell. It has been owned by the same family for 175 years and is now run by fifth generation descendants.

“Every year we carry millions of people across the Solent and we reckon many of them may be heading for Blackgang Chine,” says Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield. “We are delighted to team up with this amazing attraction to mark its special birthday.”

Blackgang Chine is celebrating its milestone anniversary every Monday and Wednesday throughout the summer with Birthday Bash events including live action cowboy shows, fairy dance workshops, magic, circus skills and much more, ending with an epic firework finale.
