Wightlink onboard prostate group’s campaign

Wightlink is working in partnership with Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group (IWPCSG) to make travel easier for men living with prostate cancer and other continence problems.

The ferry company is collaborating with IWPCSG to increase the availability of incontinence pads and to provide designated bins in which used pads can be disposed.

By asking any Wightlink retail outlet ashore or on board for “a package for Alan” customers with urinary continence issues will receive a small blue envelope containing a male incontinence pad and a disposal bag. The pads are also available from Wightlink’s customer service points ashore.

One cubicle in each Wightlink male toilet has been equipped with a disposal bin, clearly marked with a Bins for Boys notice on the door. This ensures those who need to dispose of a pad can find a receptacle facility discreetly and easily.

Wightlink has established a strong relationship with the IWPCSG over many years. The company provides free travel to support the group’s regular PSA testing sessions. IWPCSG representatives have also been valuable participants of Wightlink’s NHS focus groups that have led to improvements in NHS travel such as introducing a maximum fare cap in the amount passengers pay for mainland NHS travel.

Alan Taylor of the IWPGSP said: “Continence problems can be a real barrier preventing men’s travel so we are absolutely delighted Wightlink has been so willing to support both our Package for Alan and Bins for Boys initiatives. “Simple steps like this can make the difference between men being able to travel or having to stay at home. Wightlink are really ahead of the game and we are very grateful.”
