Wightlink staff don crazy hats to support brain tumour research

Wightlink customers are being greeted by an unusual sight today (Friday) as staff don weird and wacky headgear for Wear a Hat Day in aid of Brain Tumour Research.

From homemade creations to hats fit for a day at the races, staff have entered into the spirit of the event to help raise funds for life-saving research into the condition.

Marketing and Innovation Director Stuart James says: “We wanted to get involved in this hat-tastic event to do our bit to raise money for Brain Tumour Research which undertakes incredibly important research.

“We’re hoping to bring a smile to people’s faces as they travel with us today while raising funds and awareness for this very good cause.”

All staff taking part are donating to the charity and customers are invited to contribute some cash at Wightlink’s ports or onboard ferries.

Staff will also hold a Mad Hatters’ Tea Party and colleagues will be sharing cakes and bakes during break times to raise additional funds.

Sue Farrington Smith MBE, Chief Executive of Brain Tumour Research, says: “We are so grateful to Wightlink for supporting our Wear A Hat Day, their donations will help fund vital research. Brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age. What’s more, they kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer… yet historically just one per cent of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.”

“Brain Tumour Research is proud to be changing this. We are building a network of experts in sustainable research at dedicated Centres of Excellence while influencing the Government and larger cancer charities to invest more nationally. Help us fund the fight. Together we will find a cure.”

Wear A Hat Day has raised over a million pounds over ten years. Donations can be made by texting HAT to 70660 to give £5*

*Texts cost £5 plus network charge. Brain Tumour Research receives 100% of your donation. Obtain bill payer’s permission. Customer care 01908 867200. Charity no. 1153487 (England and Wales) SC046840 (Scotland).
