A true Islander, born and bred, Mark grew up in and around the Chequers Inn at Rookley, which has been owned by the Holmes family for 35 years. In 2019, he added the White Lion at Niton to the portfolio, followed by the Birdham at Bembridge in 2021.
Today, Mark runs Wight Pubs, Hotels & Events alongside his family, bringing together the three venues with a thriving outside events and catering business.
What is it about the Island that appeals to you as a place to live and work?
The slightly slower way of life, and the endless amount going on – especially from April through to October. Literally every weekend there are multiple things happening, particularly for families.
Where is your favourite place on the Island?
The hill field opposite The Chequers with the monument in it – you can see almost the whole Island and all the way across to the mainland, and you get an amazing sunset over Chillerton Down. Sitting up there having a picnic on a summer evening is unbelievable, and we’re lucky enough to own that field.
Where is your favourite beach on the Island?
I just love the sandy beach at Sandown. It’s brilliant down there with young kids, safe and easy, and you can make a whole day of it.
Where is your favourite place on the Island to go for a walk?
Niton and the surrounding area – some amazing walks.
What is your favourite Island event?
The Isle of Wight Festival. It brings such a buzz to the whole Island and really does put us on the map – everyone has heard of the Isle of Wight Festival, and there’s nothing like the atmosphere that weekend.
If readers only had an hour on the Island, what would you recommend they do or where would you recommend they visit?
One of our amazing venues, haha! So many places to choose from, I can’t pick just one.
