Pride of Portsmouth trail

Explore Portsmouth’s free city-wide public art trail featuring 45 stunning lion sculptures (and a roaming unicorn), each designed by talented artists and inspired by the people, places and stories of Portsmouth. It’s all part of the Portsmouth 100 centenary celebrations and each one has been designed by an artist, celebrating Portsmouth’s people, places and character.

The lions and unicorn are inspired by the city’s crest, symbolising strength, pride, protection and resilience. You can find all 45 lions marked on the map. The unicorn will move around – download the app to track it down.

Open to everyone, the trail is a fun way to explore the city, enjoy creativity, and spend time outdoors.

European Athletics Championships, Birmingham
10–16 August 2026

For sports fans, this is one of the biggest events taking place in Britain this summer. Birmingham becomes the centre of European athletics as the continent’s top competitors go head-to-head in track and field events at the Alexander Stadium.
As the first time the championships have been hosted in the UK, it’s a rare chance to experience world-class athletics without travelling overseas. Whether you’re a dedicated fan or simply enjoy the atmosphere of a major sporting event, it’s well worth making a mainland adventure of it.

Aardman at 50: Celebrating Wallace & Gromit and Friends

Generations of families have grown up with Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Morph, and 2026 marks 50 years of the Bristol-based animation studio behind them all.

The highlight for many visitors will be Inside Aardman: Wallace & Gromit and Friends at London’s Young V&A, which takes visitors behind the scenes of the much-loved stop-motion films. In Bristol, Aardman’s home city, exhibitions and interactive experiences celebrate the studio’s remarkable contribution to British creativity.

For families and film fans alike, it’s a nostalgic and uniquely British day out that’s difficult to replicate closer to home.

Kynren: The Storied Lands, County Durham

Looking for something completely different? This brand-new live-action attraction takes visitors on a journey through Britain’s history using huge sets, special effects, stunt performances and immersive storytelling.

Created by the team behind the acclaimed Kynren evening spectacular, the new experience brings historical characters and events to life on a scale more commonly associated with major theme parks — but without traditional rides. For Islanders planning a longer mainland break, it’s one of the most talked-about new attractions to open this year.

Game of Thrones: The Mad King, Stratford-upon-Avon

This world-premiere play offers the perfect reason visit the mainland for a spot of theatre. Making its debut at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Game of Thrones: The Mad King explores the dramatic events leading up to the famous story known by millions of fans worldwide. Featuring iconic houses including Stark, Targaryen and Lannister, it’s expected to be one of the most sought-after theatre tickets of the summer.

For fans of large-scale productions, it’s exactly the sort of unique cultural experience worth crossing the Solent for.

Andy Warhol at Wolverhampton Art Gallery

Major art exhibitions on this scale are rarely found on the Island, making this a compelling cultural trip for art lovers.

Wolverhampton Art Gallery is showcasing an extensive collection of works by Andy Warhol, including screenprints, drawings, photographs and paintings spanning three decades of his career. On loan from Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see works by one of the world’s most influential artists outside London.

The Light, Durham
Opening Summer 2026

Durham’s newest cultural destination aims to bring world-class exhibitions, immersive experiences and major touring shows to the North East.

Located within the former Durham Light Infantry Museum and Art Gallery, The Light combines performance spaces, exhibition galleries and visitor experiences in one ambitious new venue. Its programme will include touring exhibitions and cultural events that previously may only have been seen in larger cities.

Pride Celebrations Across England
August 2026

Summer Pride celebrations continue across England, offering colourful parades, live entertainment and community events in some of the country’s most vibrant cities. Southampton Pride celebrates its 10th anniversary on 29–30 August with music, talks, entertainment and market stalls supporting the LGBTQ+ community.

Manchester Pride returns over the August Bank Holiday weekend (29 August) with its famous Pride Village Parade and a packed programme of events across the city.

Easily reached from Portsmouth or Lymington, Southampton Pride makes a great day local out, while Manchester offers the perfect excuse for an extended weekend break.

Kielder Castle Reopens, Northumberland
Late Summer 2026

Following a major refurbishment, Kielder Castle is reopening as a gateway to England’s largest forest and one of the country’s most celebrated dark-sky destinations.

Visitors can enjoy the refreshed facilities before exploring Kielder Forest’s walking trails, art installations, wildlife and spectacular night skies. The reopening also coincides with Kielder Forest’s centenary celebrations, making 2026 an especially good time to visit.

For Islanders who love outdoor adventures, it’s a chance to experience landscapes unlike anything found in the South.

Summer Music Festivals
August 2026

The summer festival season continues with major events across England, offering opportunities to see international artists and headline acts not visiting the Island this year.

Within a stone’s throw of Wightlink’s Portsmouth ports you’ll find one of our favourites; Victorious Festival. The 2026 line-up features big names like Richard Ashcoft, The Black Keys, Kasabian, Dizzee Rascal, Rudimental and The Streets.  Islanders can make the most of our Afternoon Flyer deal; leave the Island after midday and return by 04:30 the next morning and you can cross the Solent from as little as £20.60.

Around an hour away, Boomtown will host dance names including Skrillex, Four Tet and Faithless  between 12 and 16 August. Boardmasters in Cornwall plays host to Fatboy Slim, Lily Allen and The Kooks between 5-9 August. And Creamfields is hosting an impressive set of names in Cheshire, including Swedish House Mafia, Martin Garrix and Armin van Buuren from 27 to 30 August.

Whether it’s arena performances, festivals or city-wide celebrations, mainland venues continue to attract some of the world’s biggest touring musicians.
