Protecting the environment

Our commitments for cleaner air

Clean air is a worldwide issue and we’re spreading the message by encouraging sustainable transport.  As a company we are reducing ship and vehicle emissions with a host of initiatives.

We provide electric car charging points at our ports for customers and collegaues to use and we support colleagues who cycle to work. And, of course, our hybrid energy flagship Victoria of Wight is leading the way in innovative transport across the Solent.

Cough cough engine off

We are part of Portsmouth City Council’s Air Quality Steering Group, forming initiatives to tackle pollution and improve air quality. We’re encouraging customers to switch off their engines when waiting at our ports.

Plug in and drive

We offer electric vehicle charging points at our Portsmouth, Lymington, Fishbourne and Ryde ports. The energy provided to cars so far is enough to power a Nissan Leaf around the world more than once.

Low sulphur fuel

All our ferries use low sulphur fuel, reducing our impact on both human health and the environment.

Ferry

On your bike

Foot passengers can bring their bikes onboard all ferries for free to enjoy the Isle of Wight’s 200 miles of cycle routes. We also offer a cycle-to-work scheme to encourage staff to come to work on two wheels.

Reducing food miles

We buy locally whenever possible. The Isle of Wight is renowned for its delicious produce and it helps us cut down on food miles.

For example, milk in our teas and coffees comes from Briddlesford Farm, just three miles from our Fishbourne port and tasty sandwiches and pastries come from Grace’s Bakery in Ryde.

Wight Taste outlets in ports and on ferries sell a wide range of Island food, drink and gifts, all sourced from the best Island producers.

Our environmental commitments to the sea

As a ferry company, we can play a big part in looking after the Solent. Read up on our initiatives to protect the sea around us.
