An Isle of Wight Scout group has gone behind the scenes on a Wightlink ferry to learn how the company operates, as part of their journey towards one of scouting’s top awards.
Members of the 5th Ryde Scout Group recently spent an evening at the terminals and on board Wightlink’s St Clare, gaining a first-hand look at how the ferry service runs and the roles involved in keeping passengers and crew safe.
The visit formed part of the group’s ongoing programme of activities designed to give young people new experiences and practical skills. It also contributed towards their World and Adventure Challenge Awards, which count towards the Chief Scout’s Gold Award, the highest award in the Scout section.
As well as exploring public areas of the ship, the Scouts were invited onto the bridge, where Captain Tim Bills explained his role and demonstrated some of the equipment and instruments used to operate the vessel safely.
Jamie Dowsett, a leader with the group, said: “The scouts had an amazing time on the visit, learning frontline life skills that will be essential as they grow and eventually become independent. A big thank you to Wightlink for making it all possible.”
Sara Howden, Wightlink head of customer experience, said: “It was a pleasure to host the 5th Ryde Scouts group for a familiarisation visit on our Portsmouth–Fishbourne route.
“During their time with us, we explored how the port operates, including the processes involved in loading the vessel, and showcased the facilities available both in the Customer Building and on board.
“The group particularly enjoyed touring the boat and experiencing a special bridge visit with Captain Tim Bills and his team. We were delighted to share an insight into our daily operations and loved the Scouts’ enthusiasm throughout.”
