Young Isle of Wight fisherman Ben Calder has been rewarded for his responsible approach to fishing.
Fourteen year old Ben, of Shalfleet, has been named winner of this year’s Wightlink Trophy for Most Responsible Angler in an annual contest run by the ferry company in conjunction with the Vectis Boating and Fishing Club (VBFC).
Each year Wightlink awards the trophy to the young angler who has impressed the club with their commitment to responsible angling. The trophy is part of Wightlink’s support for the local community and reflects its wish to promote good practice while fishing from Ryde Pier.
Colin Webb of VBFC explains: “Ben was by far the most polite junior this year. He was also happy to be fishing for fun and not too fussed about the competitive nature of some of the others. He just got on, fished in an extremely tidy manner and just enjoyed the moment.”
Colin also thanks Wightlink for allowing Ryde Pier to be used for junior fishing.
Ben’s mother, Victoria Calder, says: “Fishing is a part of the family really. Ben likes to go fishing with his father Simon and we all enjoy spinning for mackerel in the boat off Yarmouth.
“We are really pleased that he has been chosen for his award. It is important that fishing is done in a responsible manner.”
Ryde School pupil Ben adds: “Thank you so much for the award. The fishing competition is amazing, I’ve been going for the past three years and I’ve enjoyed it every single time. Colin is really kind to give up his time to organise the event.”
John McBride, Wightlink Port Operations Lead at Ryde Pier Head, says: “We are really pleased to see that the young anglers who fish from Ryde Pier do so in a responsible manner. Ben is a worthy winner and we are delighted to award him the 2019 trophy.”
“We look forward to continuing our support for the Vectis Boating and Fishing Club and to promoting responsible angling from the Pier.”
