Wightlink enlists a specialist to further its green agenda

Wightlink is looking to recruit a full-time Environmental Officer to help implement its new Green Manifesto.

The new post-holder will help Wightlink promote a programme of green initiatives as it prepares to welcome the hybrid-powered new flagship Victoria of Wight, which will be the greenest cross-Solent ferry in service.

Among the Environmental Officer’s tasks will be developing Wightlink’s sustainable procurement policy that has already engaged increasing numbers of Island suppliers and service providers.

The successful applicant will work across the company’s six ports to establish a culture of sustainability. He or she will set the company new environmental goals and liaise with partners including the Isle of Wight Council on local and national green initiatives such as Plastic Free Island.

Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield says: “We have recently announced a series of measures to improve our sustainability. The recruitment of a skilled and knowledgeable environment professional to oversee these – and introduce more – is a natural progression.

“There is a growing focus on protecting the maritime environment and this appointment shows we are determined to lead the way in terms of being a sustainable company that operates in a responsible, environmentally-friendly way.”

Ian Boyd from Isle of Wight ecological consultancy Artecology comments:  “This is excellent news. The new post will be a great way to develop and extend projects and practices for sustainability. Wightlink is already one of the first of the Island’s leading businesses to adopt Artecology principles with innovations for marine wildlife at Fishbourne.”
